you know i feel so free (and brainless) now that its the holidays. its so fabulous to be slacking away while everyone else its being tormented at school/work. hahah sorry to rub it in. like today's kathleen's birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAT DEAR!) and she's got a huge major paper coming up tmr. or like the thingies who still gotta slog it out at the office tmr before you guys can come out and meet up for xt's birthday celebrations. gosh i pity you guys.

speaking of work, dont think i had a great time being miss chang. it was. hell. but yeah, a very memorable and enriching experience i should say (trying to be politically correct here) and when i saw this group on facebook i knew there were so many others like me. hahaha.
You know when you are a teacher when...

You can spot incorrect grammar and spelling a mile off.

You know all of the top children's TV shows.

You can make up games on the spot.

You realise there are never enough pencils/gluesticks/scissors in the world.

You see a child misbehaving in the supermarket you automatically give them "the look".

You have perfected "the look" which turns any child to stone.

You find yourself clicking at blank pages hoping this will make a child's work magically appear.

You are immune to the smell of farts and urine.

A social life was a thing you used to have.

You know the life story of every single child in your class, and can recognise them all from the back of their head.

Wine is essential to help you mark books.

You have programmed yourself to say "my love" or "yes darling" instead of "you fucker".

In the same way, you automatically say "oh sugar" when something goes wrong.

You dread notes from parents.

You dream of decorating displays.

The word OFSTED or OBSERVATION sends blind panic through your system.

Weekends are spent planning for next week, holidays are spent writing reports.

You can't remember the last time you blow dried or straightened your hair.

You get excited in Hobbycraft!

You can maintain a straight face in ANY situation.

You soon realised that although school hours are 8.30-3.30, your day begins at 6am and finishes at 10pm.

Stupid names of children in your class become the norm to you.

Also, you realise some names you will never name your own children, due to experiences with children who have that name!

Tea and Coffee are your life.

The staffroom is your sanctuary.

Packed lunches are a part of daily life.

You want to choke a person when they say "Oh, you must have such FUN everyday. This must be like playtime for you."

You also want to stab any person who says the following with a compass "Teaching? That's just about learning how to write on a whiteboard right?"

You know what all the "must haves" for children are right now.

Knowing it's all about the blag.

You know everything there is to know about Jacqueline Wilson books.

You can sense misbehaviour without actually seeing it.

The sound of the photocopier haunts you in your sleep.

You don't know whether to laugh or cry when someone says "Teaching? That's a 9-3 job! You're so lucky!" - FUCK OFF!

When a lunchtime supervisor/helper/ta comes into your class to complain openly about them, you find yourself saying "OH dear, how sad" in an overly dramatic way!

You say things once, then repeat them, then ask if everyone understands what you are saying, before repeating again.

Your writing is now always joined up!

You know at least 5 different methods of doing multiplication (not including a calculator)

You secretly love it when a child in your class has a birthday - sweeties!

You get fed up with different news reports everyday from politicans telling you how to do your job - why don't they spend a day in a school for a change?

You find yourself using cliche teacher phrases that you swore to yourself you would never use - e.g. "pens down, arms folded, eyes front." "I'm sorry Reece, you clearly have something more important to say/be doing than concentrating on my lesson" "tuck your shirt in" etc etc

You find yourself pleading with supermarket cashiers for more vouchers for schools: "Can I please have your unused vouchers? You see I teach at..."

You start the beginning of each new term with a full set of stationery, only for it to go missing within a week. Therefore next time you write "MR/MS X" on everything, only to find this doesn't work either.

When you are out shopping in the town of your school you are greeted with at least five cries of "Hi Miss/Mr!!"

The people you work with (aka the students) are obsessed with finding out what your first name is.

You are familiar with the following abbreviations; SMT, TA, HLTA, MA, EAL, MFL, ICT, DT, NQT, QTS, SEN, GCSE, CGFS, NNS, NLS, NC, AS, SATs, HoD, HoY... and if you teach sex ed STD

If someone asks you about G&T, you don't automatically think of a Gin and Tonic. (Having said that...!)

You don't bother telling people anything about your job as they never seem to fully understand the stress...(sigh)

You count down the days till half-terms, holidays, bank holidays, weekends knowing that without them you would be headed for a nervous breakdown.

You have more control over/respect from children than their parents.

When you meet someone else who is a teacher, you have an immediate bond.

You still get nervous about class assemblies.

You loath children who finish their work quickly!

and so ive got a new blog on wordpress. nicely revamped with a more professional feel.
gonna post about my art mostly. wordpress’s so much better with the photos uploading too. (:
and ive got my own page for my portfolio. niceeeeee.

i haven't updated my blog in the longest time. i've got so much happening yet my blog doesn't reflect a thing. hahaha. so well, basically it's the school june holidays which also happens to coincide with the most fabulous thing that has ever happened to Singapore. which is the GSS, or the Great Singapore Sale. so besides the chilling out, slacking, eating good food, snoozing till afternoons and wasting my life away, i've been shopping and shopping tilll my whole wallet's fat with not cash, but receipts. and there's the perfect excuse: SHOPPING FOR UNIVERSITY CLOTHES(: which is, by the way, so much more fun than shopping for working clothes. or professional clothes. all that ironed, creaseless prim and proper things.

university is so damn exciting. i seriously cant wait till ADM starts. in case you're still confused about what kinda weird course im doing, heres the gist of everything:
im entering NTU's School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) and pursuing my four year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with direct honours. (not to be confused with bachelor of arts) im majoring in Visual Communication which is a small intake of about fifty very talented and versatile designers (hahahaha)
and Visual Communication is, by the way,
Visual communication as the name suggests is communication through visual aid. It is the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be read or looked upon. Primarily associated with two dimensional images, it includes: art, signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, colour and electronic resources. It solely relies on vision. It is form of communication with visual effect. It explores the idea that a visual message with text has a greater power to inform, educate or persuade a person. It is communication by presenting information through Visual form. There exists a variety of ways to present information visually, like gestures, body languages, video and TV. Here, focus is on the presentation of text, pictures, diagrams, photos, et cetera, integrated on a computer display. The term visual presentation is used to refer to the actual presentation of information. Recent research in the field has focused on web design and graphically oriented usability. Graphic designers use methods of visual communication in their professional practice.

p.s. im on the Nanyang Scholarship too :D

i have exactly ten weeks of idling time till my university starts. i'm returning back to teach for only about a week or two and then i'll leave my kids for good. last friday on the last day of school, i had a dreaded feeling as i said goodbye to my kids. i didnt know why, but i felt like i was already leaving them. so yeah, much as i feel like strangling them sometimes, i really still love them a lot and cant bear to leave them ): many of them know that im "leaving for the art school", but they dont know exactly when i'll be leaving. i keep saying they cant rid of me so soon and i'll still see them when term starts, but really, it'll only be for a week. which means i'll only get to see them only one more time per art class. that's. so sad ): the maths teacher for my form class had HIS last day on friday. and he actually left without even telling them. didnt wanna make a big fuss and all. but i cant bear to do that. though i highly believe i might start to tear when i do get down to telling them.

on a lighter note, i recently bought a guitar for a lil over hundred. nothing too spectacular, i just wanted one to play around with. im self learning guitar (: thanks cherylbaybeh for giving me your expertise comments on getting the guitar. hhaah seriously, i didnt even know whats the difference between acoustic and classical. and hey, im not that bad now cos i can already play some chords well and can accompany for certain, selectively easier songs. like, chris brown's with you! woohoo. and its only day three with my new toy.

and in case you havent seen me, ive had my two-and-a-half year old braces removed and now, in place of it is the worse nightmare in the form of RETAINERS. dang it hurts when i put it on and hurts even more when i try to remove it. the plastic thing fits so friggin well on my teeth that i feel like im yanking out all of my teeth when i take it off. and darn, stupid National Dental Centre takes soooo long just to get my turn with my doc. thank goodness my treatment is so called completed cos i strongly believe my total waiting time at NDC over the last 2.5 years accumulates to over 24 hours. total waste of time. and that's the problem with gahment services (excluding education of course- hello, MOE's curently my employer). you queue forever to wait for your turn for a so-called subsidized treatment, you waste ages waiting for your appointments and finally, the total cost is not unlike another's private treatment. and its so ironic because recently NDC renamed its service counters "Patient Services". a most appropriate reminder for all of us.

and whoa. this must be my longest blog entry thus far.
must have been too deprived of blogging previously. hahahah and wordpress has a wordcount. ive written an essay of 936 words. hahhaha. 938.

so i was thinking.
if i am to become an art student.
my name's too plain jane.
so i was thinking.
since jane isnt my registered official name.
i should change it to some spin-off of it.
not like jayne or janie or janey.
was thinking along the lines of.
JAIN.
as in PLAIN JAIN.
so even if you didnt know how to pronounce JAIN.
you'd still pronounce it as JA-IN (JAR-EEN).
which really sounds quite sexily british accent-ed huh.
(i bet you're all trying to say it now)

IM SORRY JANE IS TOO BORED.

my life's been crazily interesting for a plain jane but hell yeah, its great and i love it.
things im looking forward to:
1. adm welcome tea (sat)
2. nafa viscomm exhibition (sun)

4. jane with braces no more! :D (next fri)
